How to make your own cloth dusting mitt September 24, 2012

Filed under: Home — teamerickson @ 2:16 pm

It’s so simple.

And yet the idea just came to me today when I realized the dust was beginning to pile up on my shelves.

I have one of those reusable dusting wand things, but I hadn’t washed it for a while. Ew. And I’ve really wanted a dusting mitt, but didn’t want to fork over the money when I had a perfectly good wand. My desperation to dust coupled with my stinginess and refusal to buy a new mitt led to this bright idea…

So here’s how to make your own reusable cloth dusting mitt from things you already have around your house.

1. Find an old cotton sock.

2. Sniff it to make sure it’s clean.

3. Put it on your hand.

4. Dust the nastiness out of your house.

5. Toss the now dirty sock into the laundry bin.

Tips and troubleshooting:

1. If the sock is dirty, find another one. (Hint: look in your drawer.) Or, if you’re the type that doesn’t give a damn, use the part of the sock that goes on the top of your foot.

2. If your house is really dusty (or really large), grab a pair of socks and use both hands. Careful though, this move is for experienced dusters only.

3. You might also try turning the sock as you go, so you can get more dusting power from just one sock.

I really can’t believe I hadn’t thought of this before. And now I really can’t believe people actually pay money for those dusting mitts. That mitt is a sock for your hand, people!!

Anything for contractions April 4, 2012

Filed under: Home — teamerickson @ 1:57 pm

I’ve been doing as much work as I can manage, and I’ve been getting a lot of contractions for it! Remember – this is good because I’m full term now and the more work my body does now, the less it has to do later. 🙂

So today I dug a large hole and planted a really heavy shrub all by myself. I probably should have waited for J to get home, but I just couldn’t! I really wanted to see what it would look like in our front yard.

Some friends of ours from church, John and Sarita, were wanting to find a good home for this shrub since they were replacing it with something new. I said I’d take it because we have an empty flower bed in front of the house that needs something big and sun-loving in the far corner of it. We picked it up on Monday, but because of the snow that evening and all day Tuesday, I couldn’t even get out to dig a hole to put it in. The poor thing has been sitting on our garage floor and hasn’t had any water since John and Sarita dug it out this weekend. I was going to put it in a bucket but it was too big to fit in there.

So anyway, like I said, I dug the hole today. And once that was done there was no turning back. So I drug it over by myself (and this thing is HEAVY!) and maneuvered it into the hole, then drowned it with water. I think it looks great! Apparently so does Mother Nature because we already have a little spider working its way from the pine tree to the shrub and it’s only been planted for about an hour. 🙂

And here are the photos!

My favorite photo. This really shows the fiery red color of the shrub. It's so pretty!

View from the side.

View from the inside of the house. I didn't think about this when I was placing it, but it actually gives a little privacy too!

I’m expecting that tonight I’ll have a good amount of contracting going on. Whoop!

Update: Christmas Crafts December 6, 2011

This is an update to let you know I will update you sometime either Thursday or Friday on the Yule Log and wreath project. Let’s just say they’re done and there was only one minor injury to report.

Christmas Time is Here! December 4, 2011

I’m going to make a Yule Log! My very first one. I will let you know how that goes. J is going to help, so how could it go wrong? Also, I think we’re going to try to make our own wreath too.

Fingers crossed that both projects go well since they’ll bring the majority of the Christmas spirit to our home this year.

We’re not getting a tree.

I KNOW. Trust me, I know.

But we’re leaving on Christmas Eve to be with my family for my first Christmas home since 2003 (I KNOW!!!), and we’ll be there till the New Year… so coming back home after a nice big vacation only to have to take down all the Christmas decorations by myself (because J will be at work) would be pretty depressing. But a wreath and a Yule Log? Fun! And easy to dispose of. 🙂 And I’ll be making them with branches cut off of trees from the Rocky Mountains, not some fake wannabe Christmas tree from Home Depot or Walmart. Boo-yah.

So hopefully this project works out. I will let you know…

My love affair with Craigslist October 6, 2011

Filed under: Home — teamerickson @ 10:43 am

I love Craigslist. Love it.

People on Craigslist will take practically anything if it’s marked free. A couple of times this year, J and I thought we’d have to fork over the money to get one of those huge dumpsters from our trash company. Nope. Mark it free on Craigslist and it’s gone by the weekend.

About a month ago we got rid of a ton of rock from our backyard. It had dirt, pine cones, weeds, and even some trash mixed in with it. And people were chomping at the bit to get it!

We tore down our old, rotting, nasty deck and it has been sitting in our garage for about two or three months now. I made J promise that he’d have it out of there by the time it gets cold. He kept saying he was going to throw it out piece by piece with the trash. But that would be a lot of work!

Well, well, wouldn’t ya know it’s supposed to get cold this weekend. And rainy. And I wasn’t looking forward to taking my pregnant self and my baby boy out into the rain and cold to get in the car.

So last night I took some pictures of our deck in the garage and posted an ad on Craigslist that it was free. I was totally honest with the ad, said it was not great wood, had been treated, and was rotten in some areas. Almost immediately J’s email and phone started exploding with inquiries about our nasty old deck.

Here's just a part of the wood, to give you an idea.

And I am so happy to report that as of 9 o’clock this morning, our garage is empty. That’s right, empty, people. There are two railings and the stairs still sitting out in the driveway, but that’s it. And I’m pretty sure the nice folks who came this morning are coming back for that stuff. But even if they don’t there’s a guy who wants the railings. Then we just have to break the steps apart and throw them out with the trash. And I will have a garage once more!!!

Oh praise the Lord for Craigslist and for people who want free stuff.

In other news, I think I’m on the upswing with this pregnancy. I’m beginning to eat more stuff and I’m not quite as tired as usual. Yippee!

The nursery! October 14, 2010

Our nursery is nowhere near being totally set up, but I do have a couple of cute photos of our crib all decorated up!

Our nursery “theme” is basically just greens, browns, neutrals, and white.  I’m not a big fan of themes, but I am a big fan of fun colors.

So here is our crib…

I'll probably move it out of the corner once we get everything organized in there. I'll just center it along the green wall.

A little closer up. Our bedding set is from a line called Bunny Meadow. It's really appropriate for our suburb, since there are bunnies EVERYWHERE. They're like possums, only more plentiful.

And another one at a slight angle. Remember when I posted about this crib? Got it for $7 at a yard sale. LOVE IT!

So anyway, there’s a glimpse into our nursery.  We’ve also got the changing table and glider all set up and ready.  (I built them BOTH BY MYSELF!  Aren’t you proud, Dad?!)  Still need to paint the dresser we got from Craigslist.  Hopefully mom can help with that.  🙂

In other news:  Had another Dr. appt. today.  Still dilated at about 3cm.  And the Dr. wants to strip my membranes if I make it to next week.  Here’s hoping I don’t!  🙂

My fall mantel! October 11, 2010

Filed under: Home — teamerickson @ 8:00 am

I’m so excited about Fall this year that I’ve been doing a lot of rearranging and decorating for it.

Here are a few pictures of my festive Fall mantel in the living room!

The big picture. Speaking of big picture, the one that's hanging there is from Bed Bath and Beyond. Nice touch I think.

Close up of the items on the mantel. The picture of J and I was a Christmas gift from my sister. It's both of us at her wedding, and one of my favorite pictures of all time!

Close up of the pumpkins on the right. Notice there's a daddy, mommy, and baby pumpkin! Or "punkin," as I used to say when I was a little girl.

And close up of the cinnamon broom and the pot with pomegranates and pears. Don't worry, we'll move the broom when we start a fire in the fireplace. If Denver ever cools down enough.

So that’s my Fall mantel.  I’m sure there will still be a bit of tweaking here and there, but I wanted to share it with you all for the fun factor!
